This morning I woke up, stumbled into the living room, turned on my computer and discovered a message requesting that I read Samuel 1 and 2 in the Bible. Without getting into the reasons I was asked to read these chapters, I would like to discuss what I found in these chapters.
The story goes in the Old Testaments that at this time Eli, who was a priest of the Lord, had two sons by the name of Hophni and Phinehas. Now Eli claimed servitude to the Lord however his sons where of a different breed, they were sinners and they laid with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation which made the Lord’s people to transgress.
This evil that the son’s of Eli did perpetrate angered the Lord and as a result he approached, through a man of God, Eli and said regarding his sons and his father:
And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in
Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel [to be] my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded [in my] habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed [that] thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
And thou shalt see an enemy [in my] habitation, in all [the wealth] which [God] shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
And the man of thine, [whom] I shall not cut off from mine altar, [shall be] to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And this [shall be] a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, [that] shall do according to [that] which [is] in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.
And it shall come to pass, [that] every one that is left in thine house shall come [and] crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
During this time, Samuel, son of Elkanah and Hannah was devoting his time and energy in the servitude of the Lord under Eli. Samuel was born of a barren mother who beseeched the Lord to let her bear fruit. The Lord answered her prayer with Samuel. And this child, Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli.
And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
In the days of Samuels maturity, Israel went out against the Philistines to battle and was smitten before the Philistines and the Philistines slew four thousand
Israel men. The Israelites thought that as a result of this great loss, they would fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord and it would save them out of the hands of their enemies, the Philistines.
So the Israelites sent for the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts and the two sons of Eli were there with the ark of the covenant and the ark and the two sons of Eli came down to the camp of the warriors and the people were happy that the ark was amongst them to give them strength.
At first the Philistines were afraid because they saw Israel with the ark and because they were aware of the things that had gone before in Egypt with the Israelites and their God. They did not know of the punishment the Lord had promised Eli and the message they received was to quit yourselves like men and fight.
And the Philistines fought and Israel was smitten and they fled every man into his tent and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen and the ark of God was taken and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. And the glory was departed from Israel for the ark of God was taken and the promise of the Lord to Eli was enforced on that day and when Eli heard of his sons’ death, he fell over, broke his neck and died himself.
But the ark of the Lord in the hands of the Philistines created chaos and death to them because they were not true believers of the ark or the Lord for their god was Dagon so they eventually sent the ark of the Lord back to Israel and the people under Samuel, offered up burnt offerings and acknowledged the sins that they had committed.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of
Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
And here we are today, witness to the never ending battle between the same people and forever will this violence be a way of life until the end of time or so it seems. How sad some truths are and I am exhausted with this knowledge.
And that’s the way I see it!!!
